Support the Ritzy strikers!

Lambeth UNISON are always big fans of supporting other workers in struggle, it is kind of what the labour movement is all about!

Ritzy cinema workers are striking in Brixton to get the living wage – the proper living wage not the fake one that the Tories have brought in – and we want you to support them.

You can download the motion for your trade union branch here ritzy-strike-motion, which also gives you a very handy petition to take round your workplace to raise some money in solidarity with the strikers!

You can donate to their strike fund online here

Lambeth UNISON Annual General Meeting details

How You Can Get Involved

In January we will hold the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of our UNISON Branch. This is an important meeting at which we will elect the officers for the coming year and agree our policies.

As we have for the past couple of years we will organise a “rolling” AGM to maximise the opportunities for members to attend, with a main session (for which we will ask the Council for paid time off work) at lunchtime on Thursday 26 January, and two additional sessions in the days beforehand – one at the College and one (aimed particularly at school staff) after work at International House.

Activists

Our UNISON Branch has many enthusiastic activists – but we are always looking for more people to get involved and share the work! You can read about the branch officer positions which will be elected at our AGM on the UNISON website

The Branch Committee has agreed a timetable for the AGM and the important dates to note now are;

  • Monday 24 October – publication of notice of the AGM to all members;
  • Tuesday 6 December (5pm) – deadline for nominations;
  • Thursday 26 January 2017 (lunchtime) – AGM at Karibu Centre.

Migrants rights action in Brixton

Lambeth UNISON and Unite Community branch organised an action outside Olive Morris House on 4 July to call for migrant rights and for our communities in Lambeth to stand together.

Lambeth has one of the largest Portuguese communities outside Portugal, and a large Polish community, alongside many other nationalities of people effected by the vote to leave the EU. An organiser from a Polish community organisation came along to thank us for the action and plans are afoot for more events in the near future. Please get in touch to help.

Unity and solidarity in the months and days ahead will be essential.

Organisers also wanted to send a message of support to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, a man of principle who is standing up for the rest of us and needs our support.

Rock solid strike across Lambeth libraries – all libraries closed

All libraries were closed today by Lambeth Unison members taking strike action to stop the decommissioning of five libraries in the borough. Thank you to the Lambeth College staff Unison members, NUT, UCU, Unite, GMB, RMT and ASLEF members and members of the public who came down to the picket lines to show such solidarity. We all want to keep the library service open so it can serve the people of Lambeth. Our fight is your fight !

Lambeth UNISON Annual General Meeting 2016

Order of Business

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is organised on a rolling basis in three sessions.

Each session will have the same order of business as follows;

  1. Introductions and apologies for absence.
  2. The Chair will then propose that, at the conclusion of the business of the rolling AGM the meeting will stand adjourned to be reconvened before the end of March in order to consider the 2015 accounts, the 2016 budget and the nomination of shop stewards. At this point the meeting will also consider a proposal to reduce the quorum for future branch meetings from 100 to 50 members;
  3. Minutes of the 2015 Annual General Meeting and matters arising;
  4. Presentation of the Annual Report;
  5. Questions on the Annual Report;
  6. Hustings for candidates for election as Safety Officer and Labour Link Officer;
  7. Debate on motions in the order set out below

Members may attend more than one session (and members moving motions for debate or standing in a contested election are encouraged to do so) but may only vote once (which must be at the first meeting which they attend). Seating will be reserved at the second and third sessions for members who have already attended (and voted at) an earlier session.

Due to pressure of time there will not be hustings for Conference delegate elections. Candidates in those elections will be offered the opportunity to write up to 200 words in support of their candidacy (to be shared between job share candidates) and these will be distributed at each session of the meeting. Only members who pay into the Affiliated Political Fund will be able to vote in the election for Labour Link officer under national UNISON rules.

Motions which fail to be reached at an earlier session of the meeting will not be available for debate at later sessions (as not all members will have had the opportunity to debate these motions) and will be referred to the Branch Committee.

In order for the meeting to be quorate and for decisions taken on motions or in contested elections to stand, a total of at least 100 individual members must attend across all three sessions of the meeting. If the meeting is not quorate after the third session, only those elected in uncontested elections will be declared elected and the Branch Committee will make arrangements to reconvene the meeting.
